Is femur length related to stature in children?

The current study shows that femur/stature ratios of children between the ages of 8 and 11 differ significantly from their older counterparts. The present study examines the relationship between femur length and stature in children between the ages of 8 and 18 years. In previous investigations, my colleagues and I reported the surprising finding that femur length bears a nearly constant relationship to stature in adult humans regardless of ethnicity or gender. This earlier study revealed that the femur/ stature ratio averages 26.74% in adult humans, and that using the ratio to predict stature from femur length yields remarkably accurate estimates. The current study shows that femurlstature ratios of children between the ages of 8 and 11 differ significantly from their older counterparts. The femur can be broken down into four segments. If the femur is found in its entirety then its length can be used to estimate stature. However, if only segments of the femur are recovered then a combination of segments can be used to estimate stature. Background: The humerus can be broken down into four segments. If the humerus is found in its entirety, then its length can be used to estimate stature. However, if only segments of the humerus are recovered then a combination of segments can be used to estimate stature.

Does femur length predict height?

Predicted adult height was correlated both with FL in the second and third trimester, while present height of the child was correlated with FL only at the third trimester. Conclusions: FL showed a close relationship with postnatal measurements.

What is the relationship between femur length and height?

The height of a person is directly proportional to the femur length and is four times the femur length, therefore the longer the femur the taller the person and vice versa.

Does fetal femur length indicate height?

Parental height was positively associated with fetal head circumference and femur length. The associations with paternal height were detectible earlier in gestation (17–29 weeks) compared to the associations with maternal height.

What does femur length indicate?

Femur length (FL)

Measures the longest bone in the body and reflects the longitudinal growth of the fetus. Its usefulness is similar to the BPD. It increases from about 1.5 cm at 14 weeks to about 7.8 cm at term.

What is the normal length of a femur?

The length of the average femur is about a quarter of a person’s height. Let’s say you’re about 5’6”: that means your femurs are each around 17 inches long! Image from Human Anatomy Atlas.

How accurate is the femur/stature ratio in children?

This earlier study revealed that the femur/stature ratio averages 26.74% in adult humans, and that using the ratio to predict stature from femur length yields remarkably accurate estimates. The current study shows that femur/stature ratios of children between the ages of 8 and 11 differ significantly from their older counterparts.

How can the femur be used to estimate stature?

The femur can be broken down into four segments. If the femur is found in its entirety then its length can be used to estimate stature. However, if only segments of the femur are recovered then a combination of segments can be used to estimate stature. Segment 1 is from the most proximal point of the head to lesser trochanter midpoint

How much of the increase in stature due to longer legs?

The values indicate that about 60% of the increase in stature is due to longer legs. Consequently, the Maya-Americans have a significantly lower average sitting height ratio than do the Maya in Guatemala. 7.2. Leg Length and Risk for Morbidity and Mortality

How many segments of the humerus can be used to estimate stature?

The humerus can be broken down into four segments. If the humerus is found in its entirety then its length can be used to estimate stature. However, if only segments of the humerus are recovered then a combination of segments can be used to estimate stature.
