At the latest when babies can sit up, it is time for a high chair. So they can finally be fed sitting down or learn to eat independently. They can also take part in breakfast and dinner together in this way. There is a large selection of high chairs: there are, for example, high chairs that can be used for many years; Combination high chairs that can be disassembled and used as a children's table with a matching chair, and travel high chairs that are very light and can be folded up. In addition, there are also table seats that do not have legs, but are attached directly to the table. These are particularly suitable for on the go or on vacation. There are often various accessories that you can buy, such as a seat reducer or a baby seat attachment that you can attach to the high chair so that the baby can lie in it from birth as long as it is not yet able to sit up on its own.
Stair high chairs can be used from the beginning to school age and usually also into adulthood and are therefore very popular. Thanks to the stair-shaped structure, you can adjust the stair chair individually so that the chair grows with your child.

Test: The stair high chairs in detail

1. Stair chair test: Safety 1st “Timba”

The Safety 1st Timba* is a classic. It comes in five different colors and is made from solid beech. The chair is recommended for children from 6 months. With its 3-point belt and its safety bar, the Timba offers sufficient security. The small table that matches the Timba, which can be removed, as well as the safety bar are included with the chair. This is a big plus, because with most other highchairs you have to order the dining board separately. Uneven floors can be compensated for with adjusting screws on the feet, so the Timba can stand safely and stably. Compared to other highchairs, the child cannot use it for as long as it can only be loaded up to 30 kg. Another disadvantage is that you need a hex key to adjust the seat and the baseboard. You also have to loosen the chair on one side to adjust the bars or even remove the safety bar.

2. Stair chair test: Hauck “Alpha +”

The “Alpha +” from Hauck* is also recommended for children from 6 months. The seat board and the footrest can be adjusted both in depth and in height. This step high chair adapts perfectly to the development of your child. The “Alpha +” is equipped with a 5-point safety belt, a safety bar and a crotch strap. Overall, it offers more than other stair high chairs. Since the chair can be loaded up to 90 kg, the chair could be used well beyond school age. From birth you can use the Alpha + in combination with the “Alpha Bouncer 2in1”, which you can also purchase. The detachable two-piece table, which you can also buy separately, is three times adjustable in depth and can therefore be individually adjusted to your child. Thanks to the extra additional tray, cleaning the table is so very practical. The chair can be used for many years, however the lowest setting of the footboard is very high compared to other stair highchairs, so after a certain age your child's feet could be dangling instead of being able to support themselves.

3. High chair test: Stokke “Tripp Trapp”

The Stokke Tripp Trapp* is the pioneer among the stair high chairs and was developed 40 years ago. The Stokke impresses with its high quality and durability. You can choose your stair chair from more than 14 different colors as well as from beech, oak or ash. You can combine the Tripp Trapp with the extra Newborn Set, so that your baby can lie in it from birth to sitting age. The Tripp Trapp can then be combined with the baby set so that your child can sit in it from 6 months to around 3 years. Without the sets, the Tripp Trapp can be used from 36 months and can be loaded up to 110 kg. Unfortunately, the Tripp Trapp is very expensive and doesn't fit into everyone's budget. In addition, you have to order a lot of accessories, even the seat belt is not included.

4. Stair chair test: Geuther “Swing”

The Geuther Swing* is available in five different colors and is particularly striking due to its ergonomic shape. Also recommended from 6 months, the chair can be loaded up to 85 kg. The great advantage of the Swing is that the seat and footboard can be adjusted without tools using large hand screws on the sides. The backrest nestles ergonomically against your child's back. The 3-point safety belt and safety bar are included. You can also order a quickly removable table. Thanks to its solid beech construction, the stair high chair is very stable, but unfortunately also a bit heavier than other high chairs.

5. Stair chair test: roba “Sit Up III”

The stair high chair Sit Up III from roba* is comparatively light and can still be loaded up to 50 kg. Like the other highchairs, it is recommended from 6 months and can be used up to school age and even in adolescence. It is adequately secured with a 3-point belt and a safety bar. The Sit Up III consists of molded and laminated wood, which is available in a beech look and other colors. It is the cheapest in my comparison and has a solid build quality compared to the other chairs. Nevertheless, the stair high chair is designed for a long period of use into adolescence.

Advantages of stair high chairs

The stair high chair is, as the name suggests, stair-shaped and mostly made of wood, which is why it is much more stable. This construction consists of three levels, the table or safety bar, the seat and the footrest. The seat and footrest can be individually adjusted in height and, in the case of some chairs, also in depth. So your child can grow with their high chair and the investment is worthwhile for several years. After the initial period when your child is still eating with the table on the high chair, this can be removed later so that the chair can be placed directly next to the family dining table.

Compared to other high chairs, you will find that the stair high chair can be used for the longest time. Baby high chairs, on the other hand, have to be replaced after a short time because the baby outgrows them and no longer fits in. The stair high chair is adjustable so that it can always be adapted to the size of your child. So your child can sit in the high chair from the age of sitting, usually between six and nine months, up to school age at around 10 years.
Because most high chairs are also equipped with a small table, your baby can learn how you eat right. As soon as your child is supposed to eat at the family table, the table can usually be removed very easily.

What should you look out for when choosing a high chair?

A high chair should not be missing from the initial equipment, so that the child can share a meal at the family table. Since children grow very quickly, I recommend that you buy a high chair that grows with your child. This way, you will have something of the chair for a long time and will not have to start looking for a new chair again after a short time.

Safety
Safety is a very important point with stair high chairs, as with any other product that you buy for your little one. The chair should have at least a 3-point harness, better still a 5-point harness, as the shoulder straps prevent your child from getting up in the chair or leaning too far forward. A safety bar should also be available while the child is still small. This should be easy to remove once the child is older. The chair should also be stable and non-tilting, because the older they get, the more they zap around and could push their feet off the family table, for example.

Material
When buying, you should make sure that the high chair is made of a robust, durable material such as beech wood. Screws, corners and edges should be carefully processed. The stair high chair should be easy to wipe down. If you order a suitable baby seat attachment so that your darling can use the chair from birth, then it is best to make sure that the covers or upholstery, for example, can be cleaned in the washing machine. This saves you a lot of time and effort. Because trust me, once your child starts to eat porridge, or even learns how to be self-sufficient, they're going to be more than a little messy and crumbly. 🙂

Comfort
High seating comfort for the child and sufficient freedom of movement are important. There should also be an ergonomic and adjustable backrest.

Tips for using the highchair in everyday life

1. Tip:
It is best to put your child in the high chair when it can sit on its own. This is how you protect his spine. Before that you can feed your sparrow on your lap or in a baby bouncer. Many high chairs are recommended for ages 6 months and up, but most children can't sit up independently until they are 8 months old. You should wait until then. You can buy a seat insert so that your child can sit comfortably in the high chair after it has learned to sit. When buying, you should make sure that the pad is secure and easy to clean.

2. Tip:
To ensure safety, your child should always be buckled up. This is the only way to prevent falls from the high chair. As a rule, however, the highchairs are designed in such a way that they cannot tip over during normal use due to their stability.

3. Tip:
In order to protect your child's spine, your child should not sit in the chair all the time, but only at mealtimes.

4. Tip:
Never leave your child unattended in the chair, sometimes children will fidget so fiercely or kick off the family table that the chair could tip over.
