Of course, as a mommy, you want to cook for your little sparrow yourself when it comes to solid food. But you don't have to cook fresh every day, because you can also freeze porridge. You can save a lot of time this way. Above all, it is sometimes not worth the effort to cook a small portion of porridge. Freezing baby food allows you to make large batches and then store them in small portions. Depending on how much your sparrow eats, you can heat up the portions as needed.

Freeze baby food: the best containers

In principle, you can actually use any container that you can otherwise put in the freezer compartment or freezer. When solid food starts, it is advisable to freeze the porridge in portions. Because if you take large containers at the beginning and then heat up the portion and your sparrow can't eat it up, the porridge shouldn't be heated up again. So your home-cooked baby food would be a waste! Ice cube trays are great to start with.

What should I pay attention to when freezing baby porridge?

    Preserve vitamins
You should freeze the porridge after you have cooked it, like this the vitamins are retained and a longer shelf life is guaranteed. When heating, you should make sure that the porridge is heated gently. It is advisable to stir regularly and not to heat the porridge over high heat.

    Pay attention to cleanliness
The containers in which you fill the porridge should be clean or previously boiled so that they are germ-free. They should also be able to be closed tightly.

    Fill when cold
Make sure that the porridge has already cooled down completely to room temperature. You can then fill it into suitable containers. The containers should be sealed tightly before placing in the freezer.

    Leave space
Since the porridge expands a little when it's cold, you shouldn't fill the containers completely, but always leave some space.

    Label the containers
Carrot or pumpkin? So that you have an overview of which porridge is which and when it was frozen, I recommend labeling the containers. This gives you a good overview of the contents of the containers and their shelf life. At -18° C, the baby food can be stored in the freezer for two months.

    Use fresh ingredients
You should use fresh, nutritious ingredients (ideally organic, seasonal, local vegetables).

    Start with small portions
At the beginning of the complementary food, I recommend that you freeze really small portions. Ice cube trays are good for this. If the porridge works well and you want to give your sweetheart other types of vegetables, you can prepare more cubes so that you can e.g. For example, you can mix a cube of carrot with a cube of parsnip and heat them up. So you are always flexible and can see which combination your sweetheart likes best. Of course, you can also prepare the combinations beforehand and then freeze them.

    Use a meat alternative
Since meat should not be on the menu every day, you can prepare pure meat cubes that you add to the vegetables two to three times a week. Since meat is a bit difficult to puree, you can also buy the meat preparations in jars and mix them with your home-cooked vegetable puree.

You should not freeze the following varieties
Some vegetables and fruits are not suitable for freezing because they change their texture or taste. Avocado, melon, banana and potatoes do not freeze so well. For example, avocado becomes bitter and changes color after freezing. You can freeze potatoes quite well in combination with other types of vegetables, such as a potato-carrot mash.
You should also only add fresh spinach and beetroot and not freeze and thaw them again, as incorrect storage or heating can release the nitrate contained can become nitrite. Too much nitrite can lead to a lack of oxygen and be dangerous for your sweetheart.

    Oil afterwards, avoid spices
Maybe you've already read that you should mix a dash of oil into the vegetable-meat porridge and also into the fruit-grain porridge. This improves the absorption of vitamins. (In the case of evening porridge with milk and cereals, the fat in the milk is already responsible for this.) You can add the oil fresh when you heat the porridge. You don't need to freeze it. Rapeseed oil is best.

Once heated, do not freeze or heat again
Baby porridge that you have already thawed or warmed up should not be reheated or refrozen due to the formation of germs.

What baby food can I freeze?

    Lunch porridge: vegetable-meat- Porridge

Baby porridge, which is usually given for lunch and contains vegetables (with meat or fish), is great for freezing. Because here the effort is simply too great to prepare the porridge fresh every day. This is especially true at the beginning of complementary feeding, where the little ones only eat a couple of spoonfuls of porridge.

    Afternoon porridge: fruit-cereal porridge

In addition, pureed fruit can also be frozen. You can then prepare this with cereal flakes to make the well-known afternoon porridge, the fruit-cereal porridge. However, you can also easily prepare fresh fruit, for example by mashing a banana with a fork and slicing an apple with a fruit grater.

    Evening porridge: milk-cereal porridge

You should not freeze the evening porridge, as germs can multiply quickly in warm milk. In addition, the evening porridge is prepared really quickly, so you can always serve it fresh.

How much baby porridge should I freeze?

    Small portions: 20 g

Ice cube trays are great for freezing when starting solids, as babies can only manage a few small spoons at first. If it should eat more, you can always heat up more porridge cubes as needed. (A porridge cube is about 15-20 g, depending on the size of the ice cube mold and how full you fill it.)

The TOPELEK ice cube tray, for example, is great because it comes with a lid and the It is very easy to release forms when frozen.

    Large portions: from 150 g

If the complementary food works well and your sweetheart eats large quantities, then larger storage containers are recommended. You can also use these after the porridge, as they are ideal for small snacks or pieces of fruit on the go in toddlers. The advantage of containers with screw caps is of course that they are leak-proof.

The best known are the storage containers from Avent*. They are available in the smaller size of 180 ml as well as in the large version of 240 ml. The cups have a leak-proof lid and are writable, so you can write on them. You can safely warm them up in a bottle warmer or in the microwave and they are also dishwasher safe.

How do I heat up baby porridge properly?

Only heat the porridge just before you give it to your sweetheart.

    < p>In a hot water bath
Ideally, you can slowly warm up the frozen porridge in a hot water bath. This is the gentlest way to get the vitamins. It is advisable to stir from time to time so that the porridge warms up evenly.

    In the baby food warmer
With the help of a baby food warmer, the baby food can be heated evenly and gently. Some baby food warmers have a car adapter so that you can warm up the porridge for your sweetheart on the go.

    In the microwave
If you're in a hurry, you can warm up the porridge in the microwave. Make sure that the porridge does not heat up evenly in the microwave and you should therefore always stir it from time to time. So that it doesn't burn and avoid a loss of nutrients, you should also heat the porridge on a medium level at around 300 watts.

    In the pot
It is also possible in the pot to heat the porridge. Here, too, it is important to stir again and again so that the porridge does not burn on the bottom, and to slowly heat the porridge at a low level.

My recommendation for the solid food start

This book is great if you, as a mommy, want to cook porridge for your sweetheart yourself for the first time. It accompanies you week after week and offers many recipes. In addition, it also contains other important additional information, such as various instructions for preparation or which oil to use. And for 5 euros, you just can't go wrong with ordering this book and being well prepared. 🙂
