As long as babies have not yet reached the age of sitting, they should be pushed lying down in prams. These should be well padded and the wheels should be sufficiently sprung to compensate for unevenness in the floor and thus protect your child's spine. If your sweetheart can sit independently, buying a buggy is very practical, both in everyday life and on vacation. The normal pram offers more comfort compared to the buggy, but is very heavy and bulky. Especially if you want to travel, it is almost impossible to take a stroller with you. In comparison, buggies are much lighter and can be folded up small so that they can be transported without problems. The buggy is perfect for going into town, for shopping, for short walks or as a travel companion. Buggies that can be folded up small are very popular, especially when traveling by air. Depending on the airline, buggies that can be folded up small can even be taken onto the plane as hand luggage free of charge. So you don't have to wait at baggage claim after the flight. You often know how the suitcases are thrown onto the luggage wall, so you don't have to worry about the buggy getting hit. Even if the children can already walk, it is always very nice to have a buggy with you on holiday, as the little ones often need a break and can rest in the buggy.

But which buggy is best? Which one can be folded up small and still offers a lot of features such as an adjustable backrest, a sun canopy or a storage compartment under the seat?

In the following comparison, I present seven buggies that, depending on the airline, can also be taken on the plane as hand luggage due to the small folding size.

The 7 small foldable buggies in detail

1. Buggy: Joie “Pact Lite”

The Joie* Pact Lite is the cheapest of the seven buggies. With a weight of 5.5 kg and a folding size of 46 x 25 x 53 cm, it can be folded with one hand. An advantage is that you can adjust the backrest to the lying position and also put the leg rest in the horizontal position so that your baby can sleep in it. Compared to the other models, the push handle can only be adjusted twice on the “Pact Lite”, so that tall and short people can push the buggy comfortably. Joie's buggy has a carrying handle as well as a shoulder strap so you can fold it and carry it over your shoulder. Equipped with a 5-point safety belt, which is padded on the shoulders and crotch, it also has a safety bar so that your child sits securely in the buggy. There is a sun canopy with UPF 50+ and four plastic wheels with all-wheel suspension to ensure a comfortable ride. The “Pact Lite” is approved for children up to 15 kg. However, it has a comparatively small seat, so that it could eventually be uncomfortable for large children. A transport bag and a rain cover are included in the scope of delivery. There are no accessories offered by Joie to match the buggy.

2. Buggy: Babyzen “Yoyo+”

The Babyzen “Yoyo+”*, with its small folding dimensions of 52 x 44 x 18 cm, is probably the most well-known of the buggies that airlines accept as hand luggage. This makes the “Yoyo+” the perfect travel companion for air travel or family trips. It is suitable for children up to 18 kg and can therefore be used for the longest time compared to the other models due to the maximum load. It can be folded and unfolded with one hand. It is lightweight at 6.2 kg and can be easily transported using the carrying handle or the carrying strap. The “Yoyo+” comes with a rain cover and transport bag. The buggy has four spring-loaded wheels, making it very comfortable to drive. The backrest can be continuously adjusted up to 140°. The covers are removable and washable at 30°C. The “Yoyo+” has a 5-point safety belt. The sun canopy has UV 50+ protection and is water-repellent. On the back of the sun canopy there is a small compartment in which you can store additional items. A newborn attachment, with which the “Yoyo+” can also be used from birth, is available separately, a footmuff for the winter, and a board that can be attached to the buggy so that older siblings up to 20 kg can stand or sit there , a parasol, a bug repellent, a cup holder and a travel bag that doubles as a backpack.

3. Buggy: recaro “Easylife”

The “Easylife” from recaro* buggy from recaro, weighing 5.7 kg, is one of the lighter buggies and is therefore the ideal travel companion. It can be folded with one hand to a small folding size of 48 x 59 x 26 cm. With its fully sprung double wheels, the “Easylife” perfectly levels out bumps. The recaro buggy drives better than the other models on off-road paths. The backrest can be infinitely adjusted to the lying position, so that your little one can also sleep in it. It is equipped with a 5-point safety harness and soft shoulder pads. A shopping basket is located under the seat and can be loaded with up to 5 kg. The “Easylife” is suitable for children up to 15 kg. The buggy has a water-repellent sun canopy with LSF 50+, but it is not deep enough, so you need an extra sun sail when the sun is shining, for example. A mesh window integrated into the sun canopy ensures that you can always have a look at your sparrow. In addition, the window ensures good ventilation. The mesh insert in the seat area also enables ideal air circulation. A footmuff for the winter, a safety bar and a rain cover are optionally available.

4. Buggy: gb “Pockit”

The “Pockit” from gb* particularly stands out due to its light weight of 4.3 kg and its small folding size: At 30 x 18 x 35 cm, the “Pockit” can be folded down to a minimum using a two-stage folding mechanism and can therefore also be stored in be stowed in a handbag. The airlines accept the “Pockit” as hand luggage everywhere because of its dimensions. It is particularly suitable for short distances or short trips. It is not necessarily recommended for long distances, as it is a bit less comfortable than other buggies. The buggy is equipped with four plastic double wheels, which are good to drive on asphalt or slippery roads, but it is not suitable for off-road use. The “Pockit” has a 3-point safety belt with shoulder pads. These are of good quality, but they slip if the child fidgets a lot or sits up. It is suitable for children up to 17 kg. Since the backrest cannot be adjusted, your child cannot sleep in a reclined or lying position. The “Pockit” has a sun canopy, but it is much too small and is folded back when the wind is light. The storage compartment under the seat is relatively small compared to the other buggies, but can be loaded up to 5 kg. A diaper bag and a footmuff are optionally available. The “Pockit” is therefore well suited for short trips and trips, for everyday use it simply lacks the equipment for a certain comfort.

5. Buggy: Baby Jogger “City Tour”

The Baby Jogger “City Tour”* can be folded with one hand. The buggy is suitable for children up to 15 kg, the storage compartment under the seat can be loaded with 7 kg. With the small folding dimensions of 56 x 45 x 25 cm and a weight of 6.5 kg, it is also an ideal companion for on the go. The sun canopy has UV protection of 50+ and a viewing window for parents so they can still keep an eye on their child while driving. The special feature is the included transport bag, which can be worn as a backpack. The “City Tour” buggy is equipped with a 5-point safety belt, which is padded at the shoulders and crotch, and the backrest can be adjusted continuously to the lying position. The storage compartment below the seat is relatively small, but offers a small extra compartment with a zip. Optionally available are among other things: a safety bar, a rain cover and a bottle holder on the buggy.

6. Buggy: Easywalker “Buggy XS”

The Easywalker “Buggy XS”* is very light at 6.0 kg and with its small folding dimensions of 44 x 52 x 23 cm it is the perfect companion for shopping or on vacation. The backrest can be adjusted to a lying position and it has an adjustable leg rest so that your baby can sleep in a completely horizontal position. The Buggy XS is equipped with a 5-point safety harness that is padded on the shoulders and crotch. The sun canopy with SPF 50+ has a viewing window at the back so you can always keep an eye on your sparrow. With the separately available “Soft Cot”, the “Buggy XS” can also be used from birth. The “Buggy XS” comes with a safety bar and a rain cover. The storage compartment is spacious and can be loaded with up to 5 kg. The “Buggy XS” is suitable for children up to 15 kg. Due to its rather small seat, however, the buggy will quickly be too small for older children. Optionally available are, among other things, the above-mentioned “soft cot”, a winter and summer insert, a transport bag, a mosquito net and a wheeled board for older siblings.

7. Buggy: Cybex “Eezy S Twist”

The special and the big advantage of the “Eezy S Twist by Cybex”* is the rotating seat unit (even if the child is still sitting in the buggy and raises its legs): Your child can ride in the direction of travel as well as backwards. This is rarely offered by buggies. Rear-facing driving is particularly recommended for babies in the 1st year so that they can maintain eye contact with their parents and avoid sensory overload caused by forward-facing driving. Nevertheless, the buggy can be folded with one hand to a folding size of 45 x 28 x 58. In contrast to the other buggies, however, it looks larger and bulkier, so some airlines will certainly not let it through as hand luggage. Compared to the other buggies presented, the “Eezy S Twist” is a bit heavier at 7.7 kg. The backrest can be infinitely adjusted to the lying position. The buggy has sprung plastic front and rear wheels and a 5-point safety belt. Thanks to the all-wheel suspension, the “Eezy S Twist” is easy to drive on both asphalt and cobblestones. With the help of a separately available adapter, the “Eezy S Twist” can also be used with a baby seat from cybex or gb. In combination with the optionally available “Cocoon S”, the buggy can be used from birth. Children up to a weight of 17 kg can easily be pushed in it. Unfortunately, the seat is comparatively small, so that the “Eezy S Twist” could quickly become uncomfortable for older children. In addition to the “Cocoon S” mentioned above, a rain cover, a hand warmer, a safety bar and a baby seat adapter are optionally available.

What to consider when choosing a buggy?

Weight
Buggys are primarily intended for easy transport, so you should pay attention to a low total weight. The lightest buggy at the moment is the Pockit from gb, which weighs only 4.3 kg. Unfortunately, this buggy also offers correspondingly less equipment. Buggies that can be folded up small weigh between four and eight kilos.

Folding mechanism
As a rule, most buggies can be folded with one hand. However, before you buy, check how quickly and easily the buggy can really be folded up. Many have a one-handed folding mechanism that makes it easy to set up and fold the buggy with one hand.

Convenience
Good equipment in a buggy includes an adjustable backrest (ideally to the horizontal lying position), adjustable footrests, a storage compartment and a sun canopy. Especially for longer distances, the journey is more comfortable for your little one. You should only put your baby in the buggy when its back muscles are already well developed. This is often between six and eight months, when the babies can sit up on their own. The baby should rather lie in the pram beforehand to protect its spine.

Accessories
Some buggies include a rain cover and a transport bag. However, you can optionally buy a lot of things, such as a footmuff or an awning.

Tires
There are some differences in the type of tires. While the expensive buggies have spring-loaded and rubber wheels, cheap buggies tend to have plastic wheels. (My tip when choosing: the larger the wheels, the less wobbly the ride will be for your child.)

Safety
Safety is particularly important when choosing a buggy: Most buggies have a 5-point harness so that the child cannot fall forwards or sideways out of the buggy. Some models have an additional safety bar to keep the child safe. A parking brake is standard on a buggy. With most buggies, the rear wheels are locked.

Which buggies are allowed in hand luggage?

All of the seven buggies presented can be folded up small, which is why (not necessarily theoretically, but practically :)) they can also be taken as hand luggage. Each airline has its own dimensions for hand luggage, but sometimes the few centimeters that are too much are not taken into account. Here are the following dimensions from a few airlines:
• Lufthansa: 55 x 40 x 23 cm
• Easyjet: 56 x 46 x 25 cm
• British Airways: 56 x 45 x 25 cm< /p>

As you can see, some buggies do not fit into the dimensions of the hand luggage regulations, but they often fit practically in the hand luggage compartment.
(It is best to find out about the hand luggage regulations and flying with a child from the respective airline before the flight under the age of 2. In addition to hand luggage, you can often take two additional items on board free of charge, such as a foldable buggy, a baby carrier or a travel cot.)

Tips for taking the buggy on the plane, instead of handing it in

You can usually take the buggy with you to the plane at any airport. Whether you can then take the buggy on the plane depends entirely on the airline and then on the ground staff. Before queuing to get on the plane, the buggy should already be folded up and, if possible, carried over the shoulder using the shoulder strap. The employees usually do not even notice that they have to check the dimensions of the buggy and possibly have to remove it before boarding. This shouldn't be a problem, especially for high- and mid-range airlines. On budget airlines like ryanair, overhead compartments are generally smaller, so staff are very careful about what is and isn't allowed to be carried. If you are allowed to take the buggy on the plane, you will definitely save yourself the wait at the baggage carousel.
