39th week of pregnancy: What happens in the 39th week of pregnancy?

In the last few weeks of pregnancy, your baby went through a rapid growth spurt. Now it has reached its final size and will not gain much weight or length.

Your child's skin is now only covered with a little cheese smear. The greasy layer prevents the skin from drying out due to the amniotic fluid, which is gradually decreasing. In addition, the cheese smear has the function of protecting the fetus from cooling down after birth. As a rule, there is still just as much cheese smear left as necessary by the calculated due date so that the child can slide through the birth canal more easily.

If the calculated delivery date is exceeded too far, it is possible that the cheese smear has already largely dissolved. Then the child is probably born with slightly shriveled skin because it was dissolved by the amniotic fluid. In the case of transferred children, midwives speak of the so-called washerwoman's hands. But that's not too bad. The skin recovers quickly.

However, a child is only considered to have been transmitted from the 42nd week of pregnancy. A birth up to ten days before or ten days after the expected delivery date is considered due.

How big is my baby in the 39th week of pregnancy?

Your baby will hardly grow after the 39th week of pregnancy. It has now reached a length of about 51cm, which is about the size of a watermelon. It is now around 3.3 kilos.

What happens to my body at 39 weeks?

Your body is now more than ready and your spine is just waiting, finally to be exonerated. You can also do light exercises in the last stretches of your pregnancy to counteract the back pain, which is becoming even worse. A pregnancy belt can also help you distribute the weight better.

What also helps against back pain during pregnancy is a soothing massage from your partner. At this point you may be wondering whether it would be bad if the massage turned into something more: Absolutely not, sex during pregnancy is absolutely healthy as long as you feel good about it.

Caution is advised if you are pregnant with multiples or know your placenta is wrong. If you are unsure, you can also discuss this topic with your gynecologist.

How can I stimulate labor and promote childbirth?

If you want to stimulate your contractions, because you are longing for the birth, you should talk to your midwife or gynecologist in advance. They should confirm whether your child is as far as it is in the womb and which method is suitable for you individually.

If your child takes its time beyond the expected due date and does not really want to be born, labor can be induced with medication. Before this step is taken, however, there are all sorts of natural ways to promote childbirth:

  • Exercise in the form of walks, climbing stairs or cleaning the apartment can stimulate labour. However, be careful not to overload yourself, as this can pause the contractions. Because your body knows: If you are exhausted and powerless, you cannot give birth to a child. So know your limit.
  • A warm bath relaxes the muscles in your abdomen and signals to your body that you are well prepared for the birth. Make sure that the bath water is not warmer than 38 degrees. Also, you should only bathe when there is a second person nearby who can help you out of the tub when the contractions start.
  • Not everyone feels like having sex in the third trimester, and that's totally fine. However, it is true that sex during pregnancy can actually promote labor: exercise and orgasm stimulate the muscles of the uterus. In addition, semen contains certain tissue hormones, the prostaglandins. They soften the cervix and cause the cervix to dilate.
