37th week of pregnancy: What happens in the 37th week of pregnancy?
Your baby is sure to be looking forward to discovering the light of day soon. In the 37th week of pregnancy it is already well developed for this. Only the top of the skull has not yet closed. This is a clever invention of nature: in newborns, the skull consists of several bone plates, which are quite flexible and do not directly adjoin each other.
The soft skull allows the child to pass through the birth canal more easily. When you hold your baby in your arms for the first time and stroke its small forehead, you may be startled because it is very soft. The fontanelles – that's what the soft spots are called – will only grow together in the next 1.5 years. This also makes sense, because the child's brain will increase in volume during this time and thus has enough space.
How big is my baby in the 37th week of pregnancy?
At 37 weeks, your baby will be the size of a Swiss chard, which is approximately 48cm in length. It now weighs almost 3 kilos.
What happens to my body at 37 weeks?
The last month of pregnancy begins with the 37th week of pregnancy. It's almost the end of quite a long time sharing your body with another human being. And you will continue to share it: you will breastfeed your child or bottle-feed the expressed breast milk. Your body will give your child warmth, your voice will soothe your child as it has for the past nine months.
Your body is now preparing more and more for this task. He diligently produces foremilk, which can now occasionally escape. With nursing pads you can be sure that you don't get an unintentionally wet breast on the way.
How does the birth planning interview work?
You have already decided on a maternity hospital. Between the 34th and 36th week of pregnancy, it makes sense to make an appointment in the delivery room for a so-called birth planning session. It is also discussed which birth mode is individually suitable and what is particularly important to you: Is the child lying head first? Does it have to be fetched by caesarean section because it is in an unfavorable location?
When you previously registered the birth at your maternity hospital, all the information about your state of health was already recorded: Are you aware of any allergies? Which medications are taken regularly? Has an operation ever been performed? If yes, which? It's important to answer these questions beforehand so that everyone in the maternity ward knows about you and your health status.
