30. SSW: What happens in the 30th week of pregnancy?

Your baby is growing and thriving. The skin is now noticeably smoother, and there is no longer a trace of the wrinkled wrinkles on the face that it still had at the beginning of the second trimester.

This is mainly due to the fact that the fetus has more and more subcutaneous fatty tissue. This week there will be even more: the amount of white adipose tissue in unborn babies increases to around 3.5 percent of their body weight on average by the 31st week of pregnancy. And even after that, in the last weeks of pregnancy, the baby stores a lot of subcutaneous fat.

The subcutaneous fat protects the joints and bones of the child. It also makes it easier for the child to regulate its own body temperature after birth.

How big is my baby at 30 weeks?

Your baby is now about the size of a large Charentais melon. It now measures 40cm and weighs around 1.4 kilos.

What happens to my body in the 30th week of pregnancy?

In the third trimester of pregnancy you gain weight again: water retention protects your baby .

On average, women in the last trimester of pregnancy gain 400 grams per week. The total weight gained during pregnancy can be assigned something like this:

  • Baby:3.5 kg
  • Blood volume: 1.8 kg
  • Placenta: 700 g
  • < strong>Uterus: 900 g
  • Amniotic fluid: 900 g
  • Breast tissue: 900 g
  • Fat storage: 3.2 kg
  • Water retention: 1.7 kg

Please note: These numbers only provide a rough guide. Don't let this irritate you, because both you and your baby are very individual. Gaining weight during pregnancy is part of being healthy.

Make sure to keep moving. It's not about counteracting weight gain, but about stimulating your circulation. Small exercise sessions will make you feel less tired during pregnancy.

What should I consider when choosing a maternity hospital?

One of the most common questions during pregnancy is without a doubt: When and how do I choose the right hospital for delivery?

You may not be able to decide how and where you want to deliver the baby easy. For some pregnant women, it is only important that it is as close as possible to their own home and can be reached quickly. Others, however, have a list of questions and wishes that the maternity hospital should fulfil. This includes, for example, the possibility of a water birth.

Before you worry about the details, you should clarify with your gynecologist how likely it is that you will have a caesarean section. For example, if the placenta is in front of the cervix, a cesarean section is very likely.

But even if you are not planning a cesarean section, this procedure can always be used in the event of complications during the birth. So you should be a bit flexible in this regard and trust the knowledge of the medical staff.

If you already know that you are pregnant at risk, you should make sure that the hospital has an affiliated children's clinic.

During your pregnancy you will look at different hospitals. You will look at different delivery rooms and have conversations with the hospital staff at the ward. Listen to your gut feeling, first and foremost you have to feel comfortable. A consultation with your midwife will also give you security.
