21. SSW: What happens in the 21st week of pregnancy?

In the 21st week of pregnancy, the so-called brown fat forms in the fetus. This is a tissue in the neck area, in the kidney region and behind the breastbone. The brown fat serves as a heater for the baby: it burns energy and generates heat. Especially after birth, it is an important source of energy for your child and ensures that the little body does not cool down. Because shortly after birth, because of their low muscle mass, babies are not yet able to produce heat through muscle tremors like adults.

This is why it is particularly important for premature babies not to lose so much heat through their relatively large bodies after birth.

Premature babies should therefore also wear a small cap indoors so that there is no loss of heat through their heads. For children who were born on their due date, it is sufficient if they wear a hat outside.

How big will my baby be at 21 weeks?

At 21 weeks your baby will be the size of a carrot, about 26cm long. It now weighs around 350 grams.

What happens to my body in the 21st week of pregnancy?

Your belly is becoming more and more prominent in the 21st week of pregnancy. It may be that you are now increasingly struggling with heartburn.

The growing uterus and the child put pressure on the intestines and the entire digestive tract. It can lead to constipation, bloating and stomach discomfort. This also pushes the gastric fluid, which is responsible for breaking down food, up the esophagus and you have that unpleasant feeling in your throat: heartburn. This complaint will probably increase again in the third trimester of pregnancy.

Unfortunately, these digestive problems and heartburn cannot be completely prevented during pregnancy, because your baby simply takes up a lot of space.

What helps against heartburn during pregnancy?

    • Avoid carbonated drinks.
    • Nuts, seeds and oatmeal can neutralize stomach acid.
    • Sleep with your upper body slightly elevated so that stomach acid cannot easily run up the esophagus.

    < h2>When should I look for a daycare place?

You're only halfway through your pregnancy and you're just beginning to adjust physically and mentally to your new role. Bureaucratic to-dos can be quite annoying. Nevertheless, it makes sense to start looking for a daycare place now.

Particularly in urban areas, there are few childcare options and the waiting time can be up to two years. If you have planned to go back to work after pregnancy, you should organize a daycare place early on so that you can really implement your plans.

However, the registration process is different in each state. In Munich, for example, where the crèche space situation is particularly tense, parents can register their child at up to 6 municipal daycare centers at the same time and already during pregnancy using central software.

In Berlin and Hamburg, parents need a daycare voucher , with which they can register at the day-care centres. The best thing to do is to get information directly from the day-care center of your choice or from the youth welfare office. Your midwife may be able to give you tips on where to go.
